Organized by the Program in Occupational Therapy , the Spartan Light Metals Product Makerspace in the McKelvey School of Engineering, the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts with support from Cecropia Strong, a non-profit that aids persons with disabilities, and the MO Better Foundation
Our 2025 AT Make-a-thon is a collaborative, hands-on experience open to undergraduate students and master’s student in the McKelvey and Sam Fox schools and students in the Program in Occupational Therapy (OT) at Washington University in St. Louis.
Interdisciplinary student teams partner with a co-designer (an individual with disabilities living in the community) to develop a simple AT device that helps the co-designer participate in life to the fullest. You’ll be part of an intense 9-day experience that increases your skills and benefits the community. Please complete the interest form below by Jan. 10, 2025.
Teams of engineering, design, and OT students will partner with a co-designer (an individual with disabilities living in the community) to develop a simple AT device that help the co-designer participate in life to the fullest. Your team will:
- learn about the co-designer’s needs and begin your team planning process during the kickoff event at the Community Experiential Learning Center (CELC) at the med school campus on Tue. Jan. 28 from 6-8:30 pm.
- iteratively design, build and test an appropriate AT device. The SLMP Makerspace on the Danforth Campus will be available for build sessions between 10 am and 6 pm on Sat. Feb. 1 and Sun. Feb. 2.
- give a short presentation about the AT device you created to co-designers, other design teams, and community members at the wrap-up event at the CELC on Thu. Feb. 6 from 6-8:30 pm. Design prizes and participation certificates will be awarded.
Who can participate in this event? This year’s event is open to undergraduate students in the Sam Fox School, undergraduate and master’s students in Engineering and 2nd year students in Occupational Therapy. Interest forms for the 2025 make-a-thon must be submitted by Jan. 10, 2025. We’ll confirm your participation by Jan. 17, 2025. Priority will be given to upper-class undergraduate students.
When will I know which team I’m on? If you indicated interest by the registration deadline, you will receive an email approx. 1 week later asking you to confirm your participation. Final team placement and event details will be available approximately one week before the event kick-off.
What if I have a class conflict or will be traveling on the weekend of Feb 1-2? This is a short but intense event, so we ask that sign up only if you can attend the kickoff, build sessions and wrap-up events.
What if I know someone who might be interested in participating in this event as a co-designer? Please reach out to Marit Watson marit.watson@wustl.edu for more information.
I have another question. Please email jubelmakerspace@wustl.edu and we’ll try to answer it for you.
